Turnips or Radishes?

When I was at the farmer's market a couple of weeks ago a nice older Italian man with a big cart offered me what at first glance I thought were a couple bunches of radishes. I said what are these? He just said "try them" I'm not sure his english is all that great. Anyway, I've been letting them "ripen" in the fridge and tonight decided that they were turnips (first I googled "difference between turnip and radish - totally no help!) I mean they are small, but all sorts of colors, red, purple, white but they didn't have the tops that radishes usually have. So, I did an Alice Water's recipe and just sauted/steamed them with butter for about 25 min. Richard came up and I said "here try this" he promptly spit it out. I'm pretty sure now that they were radishes...
