The Most Asked Question

Can you guess what the first question people ask when I tell them I do a food blog? It's not "I didn't know you cooked." it's "Have you seen Julie & Julia?" I had read the book awhile back and totally enjoyed it, but I hadn't yet seen the movie. Which made me realize we hardly ever go see movies in the theater anymore. I'm just so comfortable at home with my big TV - and with Netflix and On Demand - who needs to leave the house? I mean, my popcorn has real butter melted on top! I'm trying to think about the last movie I saw in a theater... the last I remember was Beverly Hills Chihuahua - took a young friend, but still that's a pathetic one to be my last. Anyway, my point is we finally watched Julie & Julia last night and of course it was totally fun to watch; I especially loved the scenes with Julia played by Meryl Streep- she is the master of accents! I haven't read Julia's book My Life in France - but now I'm going to have to order that from the library. I have actually had my own brush with greatness as I have met her - Julia - not Julie! One day a long time ago - I think it was '96 - I was down shopping at Macy's and when I wandered down to the Cellar there was a large group of people milling around. When I asked what was going on they said Julia Child was there signing her new book Baking With Julia. So I thought, cool - I don't have that book and the line isn't too bad, so why not? So here comes the brush... when I got up to her she looked up at me and said "Oooh, I just love that hat you're wearing!" Now for those of you that knew me back then I went through a big hat faze, I do still wear them sometimes, and of course I can't remember what hat I was wearing that day but I was thrilled. Top that one Julie Powell! I do have to admit though that I am a little jealous of her blogging popularity... which poses the question "why do I blog?" which of course is what my husband asked me after we watched the movie last night. It started as a lark, I think I've said earlier that I keep a little food journal of what I make and who comes to dinner and I did that because I make so many different recipes and I wanted to remember good meals that I put together and where on earth in my hundreds of cookbooks the recipes were! But this is more work than my journal - as I replied to Richard, well, it's not like work or for that matter working out (meaning something I dread) but it is sometimes something that I feel obligated to do. Well, I still don't know the point of all this blogging - it has been fun and I get a total thrill out of checking my site meter (at the bottom of the blog page) to see how many people have been checking it and if they googled a recipe for bubble and squeak and ended up at my page. Do I want more than that? Do I need fame? If I really dig deep and confess I would say I kind of do. I don't mean I need a book or a movie (although I probably wouldn't kick them out of bed) but how about just some more people enjoying my blog? So - please pass my blog on to your friends, family, co-workers, strangers you meet on the street - whatever! That is if you enjoy it... you could let me know sometime - hint, hint. I know it's difficult to post comments, but if my Uncle Lin can do it (thanks Lin!) then so can you! Goodness, blah, blah blah - I promise not to be so long winded most of the time - love R
