New Idea - cooking lessons anyone?

While talking to a friend yesterday, discussing ideas around the blog-thing, I started trying to think of new ideas to tie into the blog. Earlier this month as a birthday gift to a friend who doesn't really cook very much I suggested she come up with something she loves to eat or a favorite dish from childhood and I would go over to her house and teach her how to cook it. I was also reading a Jamie Oliver statement about "pass it on" which is his idea to learn a recipe and then teach someone else how to do it. All of these things got me to thinking. How about an easy cooking session at my house, or at some other volunteer's, where we decide what to make and go through the steps to make it, then eat it? Or we could do something like I get all the groceries together, show everyone how to make it and then you take yours home to finish cooking for your family or friends. I know this is not really a new idea, but it would be new to me! I think it can even be a co-op kind of thing where one person is really good at one thing - I keep thinking my friend John and I are going to get together so he can show me how to make croissants as he is into making breads and everybody always wants to join me to can something... Anybody up for this? I just want people to get comfortable in the kitchen and end up with a few favorite things that they can make anytime. I was thinking we could each chip in for the groceries and figure out things from there... email me and let me know.

Oh - last night when I was having trouble going to sleep I was thinking it also might be fun to pick one really good cookbook with simple recipes and work through that. Ok, not to the crazy Julie/Julia method where you have to do every recipe, but I have a few favorite books that we could try (see possibles on the left side). Everyone would get their own copy and then make notes in them about what we did, if we adjusted anything etc. What do ya think?

  1. This post has been inserted by the author. You could do the whole thing into a Youtube video.

  2. Somebody else suggested the youtube thing... have to buy a video camera first - and get Rich on board...

  3. Richard's IPhone can take the Youtube video's. It is fairly short segments. If it takes 20 minutes to make a dish, it will usually be condensed down to about a 2 minute video. You won't even have to dress up as it will mainly be your hands. You might give it a try. I'll be you will like it and you might be famous. Richard needs a new hobby anyway and think of the togetherness. His computer work is so great, you have to believe he would do a great job on the editing and stuff. It is also free.

  5. They have hundreds of them aleady. I watched some and they reminded me of my Mother doing it when I was a kid. I loved poached eggs, but pretty much microwave them now. They really looked good in the video.
